چکیده

Update in Anaesthesia | www.worldanaesthesia.org CEREBRAl BlooD FloW The brain is unusual in that it is only able to withstand very short periods of lack of blood supply (ischaemia). This is because neurones produce energy (ATP) almost entirely by oxidative metabolism of substrates including glucose and ketone bodies, with very limited capacity for anaerobic metabolism. Without oxygen, energydependent processes cease, leading to irreversible cellular injury if blood flow is not re-established rapidly (3 to 8 minutes under most circumstances). Therefore, adequate cerebral blood flow must be maintained to ensure a constant delivery of oxygen and substrates, and to remove the waste products of metabolism.

Spontaneous Intracranial Hypotension Plus Cerebral Venous Thrombosis: A Case Report Study

This is a case study of a 34-year-old woman who was admitted to hospital with a history of severe orthostatic headache. She was diagnosed as having spontaneous intracranial hypotension (SIH) by undetectable cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pressure at lumbar puncture, and with evidence of diffuse dural enhancement of the brain detected by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). However, the contrast-enhance...

A survey of intracranial blood flow velocity in thalassemia intermedia in Khuzestan Province, Iran

Background: Beta-thalassemia intermedia (BTI) is a type of hemoglobinopathy with an increased risk of cerebrovascular accidents, and transcranial cerebral Doppler ultrasonography (TCD) through determining the mean cerebral blood flow velocity (CBFV) can serve to predict the risk of a developing stroke. This study aims to compare patients with beta-thalassemia intermedia and healthy individuals ...

Cerebral haemodynamics during experimental intracranial hypertension.

Intracranial hypertension is a common final pathway in many acute neurological conditions. However, the cerebral haemodynamic response to acute intracranial hypertension is poorly understood. We assessed cerebral haemodynamics (arterial blood pressure, intracranial pressure, laser Doppler flowmetry, basilar artery Doppler flow velocity, and vascular wall tension) in 27 basilar artery-dependent ...

Effects of hyperbaric oxygen on intracranial pressure and cerebral blood flow in experimental cerebral oedema.

Increased intracranial pressure was induced in anaesthetized dogs by application of liquid nitrogen to the dura mater. Intracranial pressure and cerebral blood flow were measured, together with arterial blood pressure and arterial and cerebral venous blood gases.Carbon dioxide was administered intermittently to test the responsiveness of the cerebral circulation, and hyperbaric oxygen was deliv...

Raised intracranial pressure and cerebral blood flow. 2. Supratentorial and infratentorial mass lesions in primates.

Changes in cerebral blood flow with increasing intracranial pressure were studied in anaesthetized baboons during expansion of a subdural balloon in one of two different sites. With an infratentorial balloon, cerebral blood flow bore no clear relation to intracranial pressure, but was linearly related to cerebral perfusion pressure. Apart from an initial change in some animals, cerebrovascular ...

Cerebral vasomotor reactivity testing in head injury: the link between pressure and flow.

BACKGROUND It has been suggested that a moving correlation index between mean arterial blood pressure and intracranial pressure, called PRx, can be used to monitor and quantify cerebral vasomotor reactivity in patients with head injury. OBJECTIVES To validate this index and study its relation with cerebral blood flow velocity and cerebral autoregulation; and to identify variables associated w...
